REVIEW - FIRES OF ATONEMENT by Cameron Scott Kirk

The trail up the mountain was steep and treacherously narrow, making the journey upwards even longer as they held to the side of the mountain. Julian, Martin and Klaus followed Brother Vernon to their new home to train as Brothers of the Order of Ulfur.

They thought their treacherous journey, walking several thousand feet up the side of the mountain, had finally come to an end when they appeared before monks guarding the only way to the top of the mountain. A cave containing an open platform where the monks would lever them up through the dark abyss.

When finally stepping off the platform after a terrifyingly dark and claustrophobic ride, they finally lay eyes on the the temple and areas surrounding that would be their new home. After they walk the three hundred and thirty-three steps upward...

Their first day was spent going over the rules. One of which was that the top floor of the Grand Chapel was off limits to everyone except the top monks. Julian decided he would one day learn the secrets hidden there.

Julian had been sent down the mountain for supplies and everything was okay until he was robbed by a street urchin. When he tracked her down, he learned that Cassie oversaw and protected all the street children. And she planned to save them all after getting to the hidden treasure in the Grand Chapel of the Monks of Ulfur.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Julian got more than he expected when he pledged to the Order of Ulfur. The monks were hiding dangerous secrets. But Julian had his own secrets.
This book is action-packed and full of danger. This book is full of twists and even more surprising cliffhanger. This is a sci-fi story with a twist. Totally unexpected, but highly recommend.
