Pucking
Love is set around the players of the New York Crushers.
Each book focuses on a different couple. They can be read in any order but for the best experience, they should be read in order… but you can totally start with book 3, I Pucking Hate That You Love Me. It’s my fav so far but I think Rick and NAME’s book will be my fave.
What is the sub-genre and trope? Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?
I Pucking Hate That You I Love You, was originally going to be a standalone. It came out in 2022 and then I was invited to an anthology about firsts and then the rest of the team started nattering away and BOOM, I had a new series pouring out of me.
Are you more character or plot driven?
Ummm, I think both. I have a plan on where I want things to go and along the way, I want the characters to grow.
I think book four, I Pucking Hate To Love You, is very character driven because we Stefan aka Doucheman change over the course of the book.
Then I Pucking Hate That You Love Me is plot driven as you follow Lex and JJ over several years.
With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind? Do you have a story/vision board above your workspace?
Each book has what I call “Character development” sheets and each story has a playlist. These two items get me into the zone for that book and I know what I need to do.
I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own. Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?
Everyone of my characters do this LOL. Doucheman is probably the character who shocked me the most but then again, are we really surprised that he would do that to me????
Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you know?
Nope, I try not do that but in my first novel, Malt Me, some of the things Jordan and Kenzie do are loosely based on me and my life.
Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you know?
I think a little of me is in all my female characters
Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?
Each book always has a scene/moment that is hard to write but I think the toughest book for me was After the Ashes. What I do to Tatum and Penn was emotionally hard, it’s the first book I have openly sobbed over while writing.
What is your favorite book in the series?
I Pucking Hate That You Love Me is currently my fave but I think when I get to I Pucking Hate To Want Your Love that will become my fave. Mav’s story has been weaned into the series already and I cannot wait to dive into his.
I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?
Yeah, nope, I can’t choose one, I love them all … even if I want to throttle them at times.
Series question - Who is your favorite couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?
See above reply LOL
How do you get inside these characters’ heads to find their perfect HEA?
Music, I always have a playlist and as soon as I hear the songs it transports me into that world.
What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you? Why?
I think the first time Jett plays fake for Margot is my fave. It’s the scene that starts it all and it’s so sweet and out of the blue for him.
Series - Were any of the books harder to write than others?
Doucheman’’s was so hard to wrote but Lexi & JJ’s (I Pucking hate That You Love Me) was the hardest to get the beginning right. I think I reworked it 1321456456322 times, and I’m not exaggerating with that but as soon as I got the flow of the beginning right, it just poured out of me … and it was fun to revisit Preston and Cress, Lexi’s parents are from Falling for Dr. Knight and it was fun to incorporate the lollipop scene again.
How long did it take you to write this book/series?
It's Pucking Fake took me about 4 weeks to write… the series, I started it in 2021 and I’m still going.
How did you come up with the title for your book and series?
To be honest, I cannot remember how I came up with the first books titles and it wasn’t until book 4 that I came up with a series name.
If you met these characters in real life would you get along?
Yes… I think… even if I would want to junk punch Stefan.
Series question – Did you know in advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book one demand their own story?
Nope, as I said, it was only to be a standalone and now there will be eight books… possible more if any of the side characters I’ve introduced want their own story, I’m looking at you Jaxson (he the agent for most of the guys on the team, and he also appears in Fractured as Marshall’s agent too).
If your book/series were made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?
Ummmm, I haven’t really thought about it before but I think Margot Robbie would be a great Margot.
Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next? Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series? Can you share a small tease?
I have just started to plot the next Pucking book, I Pucking Hate That I’ve Always Loved You. It’s about Evie (the team doctor) and Miller who was traded with Stefan. They knew each other years ago and Evie is hiding a biiiiiig secret from Miller that not even I saw coming when it popped into my mind.
Shortly after her son was born, DL began reading again. With encouragement from her husband, she picked up the pen and started writing, and now the voices in her head won’t shut up.
DL enjoys listening to music, drinking white wine in the summer, red wine in the winter, and beer all year round. She’s also never been known to turn down a cocktail, especially a margarita.
