He has an awesome family and has customers lined up at the doors for him to restore their old cars, but racing in the old, rundown racetrack outside of town exhilarates him. And the best thing about these illegal races is that they are outside of Tilikum and his brother's jurisdiction.
Melanie watches as the moving truck pulls away. She is more than happy to see the last of her ex-husband, but returning home to Tilikum fills her with both anticipation and dread. She loves her hometown and her family, but her ex-husband refused any contact unless between their attorneys and she was broke. Her next job had been delayed, and with a non-compete clause, she wasn't sure how she was going to support herself in the small town.
She just misses hitting another car when she looks up and realizes this was the real reason she dreaded coming home. Of course, he was the one she had almost hit... her high school boyfriend - Luke Haven. The bane of her existence.
I loved this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. What isn't there to like going back to Tilikum and reuniting with the Haven and Bailey family.
This book is narrated by Erin Mallon, Marcio Catalano and Robert Hatchet. What an amazing combo. You could feel the anticipation of the race and smell the fumes of car exhaust and grease through Marcio's passionate voice. Erin - just perfect - a voice actor playing... a voice actor. And her range of personas drew you in with pure Melanie dramatics. And Robert Hatchet, well, if you need a villain, he is the voice you want. The evil intent came through, running chills down your spine.
Although these stories all have their own HEA, these characters are recurring and very involved in each other's stories. And it doesn't start with the Haven's. My favorite will always be Asher Bailey, but each story gets more intense than the last. We take a visit back to Salishan Cellars and even a trip to Jetty Beach. Make sure you read The Bailey Brothers and The Miles Family series to catch up on all the family connections and you can't miss the Bailey/Haven feud and those squirrels...
This book is full of suspense from page one. The angst between Luke and Melanie alone will keep you turning the pages, but with danger lurking, you can't put the book down - or stop listening to the voices telling you the story. I can't wait for Theo's story, but the mysterious Reese has been dangled throughout and I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.
Highly recommend!
