Elfi struggled to open the heavy wooden door, but she was completely locked in her room while the castle was under attack. Despite being a skilled shield maiden warrior, trained by her own Viking warrior brother and having a lethal blade, her Viking father forbade her from fighting.
This was not the first time that the Count of Soissons had attached their fortress. The last time they battled, even though they were able to defend the castle, she lost her beloved brother just four months earlier to a poisoned blade.
The Count of Soissons was only there because of her father's refusal to accept his demands to marry her, the Heiress of Étretat. Such a marriage would have obtained him the title of ruling Count of Étretat.
Although the warriors were able to defend the castle her father was captured and would only be released upon her acceptance of marriage to the Count of Soissons. She immediately sent an urgent message to Count Skårde and his father, Jarl Rikard, begging for reinforcements.
When Jarl Rikard, the Duke of Normandy arrived, he told her had requested the presense of the finest Danish jarl to lead the warriors to rescue her father, but also to marry her. She looked at him in horror and rage set in that no one saw her worth except as chattel. She was to be married to Njörd Ívarrsson, the Danish jarl of Ribe.
I loved this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This is book two of the Valiant Vikings and although it can be read as a standalone, I would suggest you ready Dragon of Denmark first as the characters are recurring and the history involving their enemy continues throughout.
Ylva and Skårde's story takes place almost two decades before, but I highly recommend reading it. In saying that this book does leave you with a cliffhanger so there is a HFN ending and their story that will continue.
This Viking romance is action-packed and full of danger and intrigue. There are tons of political intrigue and treachery in this smoking hot Viking mystical romance. Unlike Ylva, who was a healer, Elfi is a warrior, but also has her own mystical powers. I love all of Jennifer Ivy Walker's books, but I think this is my favorite to date. Highly recommend!
