Gemma should have listened to her brother Tobias. Trust no one.
Gemma had been home schooled her whole life with the other girls at the group home until it had to be shut down because the owner had a debilitating stroke. For the first time in her life she was attending high school and she knew she was in trouble as soon as the guidance counselor led her to the principal's office with her sketchbook in hand.
When she explained her sketches her uncle was called into the office. As soon as she heard his lies about her mental illness through the crack in the door she ran. Until he caught her. Judge Stallard. One of the most sought after judges in the country. And he wasn't her uncle and as he taught her good girls were punished when they broke the rules.
Now she was at St. Mary’s boarding school because a social worker wouldn't let up when she found out a teenager not related to the Judge was living with him. Maybe now she can finally make her escape.
This book is very dark and grabbed me from page one. It is excellently written and you can feel Gemma's pain and despair through the pages. The characters are amazing and very relatable. Sloane and Mercedes who are becoming her first friends. The Rebels - Isaiah, Cade, Brantley and Shiner who run the school with traditions from the past. Gemma and Isaiah smolder the second they lay eyes on each other, but they both have secrets. Secrets that could get them killed.
This book is action-packed and full of danger and intrigue. It leaves you with a cliffhanger that just leads to more questions and I can't wait to continue Gemma and Isaiah's story. SJ Sylvis has written a gripping story that had me on the edge of my seat. The twists just keep coming! Highly recommend!
