THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY - THE HIGHLAND LADIES Series by Celeste Barclay

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
THE HIGHLAND LADIES Series by Celeste Barclay

Get a behind-the-scenes all-access pass to Celeste Barclay's The Highland Ladies Series!

The Highland Ladies series is a steamy Highlander romance series where ladies-in-waiting at Robert the Bruce’s royal court discover love and adventure, heartache and happily ever after.  Return to the days of loyalty and honor, with heroic but flawed Highlanders and the women who challenge them.

All the books have ladies-in-waiting at Robert the Bruce’s early 14th-century royal court as the heroines.  Characters appear with cameos in other books, and it’s a spinoff from my The Clan Sinclair series.

What is the sub-genre and trope?  Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?

It’s Medieval/Highlander/Ancient World for sub-genres.  It’s an opposites attract trope.

I knew I wanted to use a heroine who had cameos in other books in the series, and I already decided to title the book A Devil at the Highland Court, so I made the hero devilish.

The hero had a cameo in one book in The Clan Sinclair series and will be one of the characters who ties The Highland Ladies to my next series, The Clan Sinclair Legacy, which will begin Feb 2022.

Are you more character or plot driven?

I don’t separate the two.  They’re both integral and drive one another.

With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind?  Do you have a story/vision board above your workspace?

I have a hardback journal where I keep the story arch notes and main character notes for each book since about my fourth or so book.

I’ve just written a reader’s guide to The Highland Ladies, and that basically made me create a series Bible to finally have much of that information centralized.  I don’t care for boards.

I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own.  Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?

Not really.  Some of them had witticisms I didn’t expect until I was writing the dialogue.

Sometimes the story goes in directions I don’t expect, but I have a strong idea of the main characters from the start.

For secondary characters, I have a general idea of how good or how bad they are before I begin.

Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you know?

No

Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you know?

I generally think about how I would react or behave if I were that character and had that character’s personality or physical traits.  I suppose their POV is based upon me.

Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?

I’ve made myself cry several times during the course of writing my 30 novels.

In A Wallflower at the Highland Court, I wrote a large autobiographical character, so there were some emotional moments in it.

What is your favorite book in the series?

I don’t have a favorite per se, but An Enemy at the Highland Court is the one I’m probably most proud of and one that I could reread many times and almost forget that I’m the author.

I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?

One of my favorites is Laurel Ross in A Hellion at the Highland Court, which is loosely based off Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.  She’s guarded, jaded, and sharp tongued.  She has an entire backstory to why she is as she is, but I loved writing the banter between her and Brodie Campbell, the hero.  I really liked making Brodie older and more worldly to match and understand Laurel.

Who is your favorite couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?

I have several favorites.  I just mentioned A Hellion at the Highland Court for the favorite character.

I also really loved writing Blair Sutherland and Hardwin “Hardi” Cameron in A Saint at the Highland Court.  They were childhood friends, so it’s sort of a second chance romance.  He’s rather a feminist and appreciates Blair is better educated than he is.  They’re the couple I describe as having the best intuitive understanding of one another.

How do you get inside these character’s heads to find their perfect HEA?

I really don’t know how to answer that.  By 100k words or so, I’m already pretty darn deep by the very nature of having written 400 pages about them.  I have a general HEA idea as I plan the story arc.

What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you?  Why?

There are numerous scenes from throughout the series that stick out with me.

One of the earliest scenes I envisioned for A Devil at the Highland Court is where Michail and Blythe find themselves in the royal garden, each with someone else.  They argue, and both soon forget they’d planned a tryst with someone else.

Were any of the books harder to write than others?

A Wallflower at the Highland Court and An Enemy at the Highland Court were at times hard because there is quite a lot of autobiographical themes in them.  I didn’t struggle to devise the story or the actual writing part.

This question is if you write in MULTIPLE POVs not just the hero and heroine - I love the multiple POVs in a book.  It’s not just the hero and heroine, but we get inside the heads of multiple characters throughout this series.  I feel that it gives the story further depth.  Do you think you will write another book or series following this multiple POV outline?

All of my books are multiple POV.  Its’ the style I like best to read and write.

How long did it take you to write this book/series?

I released the first book in Dec 2019, and I will release the last one in Nov 2021.  They all take me 2-3 weeks to write.

How did you come up with the title for your book and series?

I kept with the theme of direct article +noun+ at the Highland Court.  I wanted a character who was rather wild and thrill seeking, so A Devil came to mind.

If you met these characters in real life would you get along?

The heroes and heroines, yes.  The villains, definitely not.

Did you know in advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book one demand their own story?

I only write in series, but a few secondary characters got their own stories from repeat reader requests.

If your book/series were made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?

For A Devil at the Highland Court, I think Saoirse Ronan or Sophie Turner would be good for Blythe Dunbar, the heroine.  Both would likely have an easy time adopting the Scottish accent.

I think Fionn Whitehead or Tom Holland would be good choices, and they’re English, so the accent may be easier for them.

Australian Callan McAuliffe might also be a good choice.

Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next?  Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series?  Can you share a small tease?

It will be a new series beginning in Feb 2022.

The Clan Sinclair Legacy takes readers back to my first series, The Clan Sinclair.  They will meet the children of the original couples.

Some of their love interests will be the children of couples from The Highland Ladies.

The first book, Highland Lion, will tie the family lineages of the hero and heroine back to my Viking Glory series.

Bio:

Celeste Barclay, a nom de plume, was born overseas, but she and her parents immigrated to the United States when she was a baby, becoming citizens a few years later.

As an only child with family in Europe, Celeste traveled quite a lot from a young age.  Spending most of her summers in England where her mother’s family is, Celeste became accustomed to the rolling hills of Yorkshire, and even now, England feels much like a second home.

Celeste also fell in love with European history during her many travels throughout Denmark, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain.  But her passion was for the English monarchy and their various (mis)adventures through the ages.

This was the jumping off point for her interest in medieval Scotland and the strained relationship between the English and Scottish.

Celeste and her family settled in the Midwest, where she spent her childhood.

She grew up swimming, playing soccer, and reading.  Lots and lots and lots of reading.

She devoured the British classics and read several French classics in their original version.

After high school, Celeste moved to the East Coast for college and remained there through her mid-twenties, calling the Washington, DC area home for most of that time.  She still considers that area her home in her heart of hearts.

Nowadays, you can find Celeste driving along the Southern California coast when she’s not busy writing.

She enjoys quiet time at home with her family just as much as she likes to be outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

Celeste hopes to make it back to the East Coast one day.  Perhaps in retirement.  In the meantime, she’s California living, not California dreaming.
