Kahlahnni is hiding from Ambrosse so he doesn't steal her rations regardless of it only being stale bread. Ambrosse is the resident bully at the boarding house for orphans and has made it his mission to torment her. She may only be nine, but she is getting better at avoiding him since he had cut her hair in the kitchen.
Lahnni worked from dawn to dusk in the laundry room for her keep and made sure to keep her head down. Not that anyone paid her any attention and the attention she did get was scorn for being different. Unlike everyone else in town, her hair was as dark brown as her eyes. Her only friend was Cellecia. But Cellecia now works in the manor in the Lord's kitchen leaving Lahnni to fend for herself.
When the position came open for someone to care Lady Aislynn, the Lord's elderly mother, Lahnni was grateful to be away for Ambrosse and not have to fight for her food. When Lady Aislynn past away she was called into the Lord's study and when he touched her face a horrible vision came into her head. She had been having these visions since she was nine and didn't know what they meant, but this one terrified her to her bones. Luckily, Captain Emmettin arrived telling him that Lady Aislynn had gifted her to his family upon her death.
The priest was on his way to their town for the supplicant branding. At the age of nineteen everyone was branded and the brand would tell where you stood in the caste system. But, her brand was something she had never seen before and the sight of it just made the villagers more antagonistic. The only one besides Cellecia and her family not looking at her in horror is the Sergeant traveling with the priest. Evan.
I loved this book. This is a fairytale retelling that kept my attention from page one. This story is very well written and you can feel Lahnni's despair throughout the pages. Lahnni has been tortured her whole life and had no one to help her with her questions. After the branding ceremony, Lahnni knows she has to leave and not knowing how to survive on her own accepts Evan's help. Only to find out that Evan has his own secrets.
I highly recommend this book!
