Six years ago Max watched his ward's best friend Lizzie get married. He knew that she had had a crush on him when she was twelve so he did everything he could to avoid being near her hoping her crush would die, but when she turned seventeen he stayed away for another reason.
She was too young and innocent for him. He was fourteen years older than her and he wanted to give her time to grow up before letting her know he was interested. He had waited too long and now had lost her to another man.
Lizzie was returning to Chicago with her five-year-old son Hunter to start a new life. Her marriage was ending in divorce and the only sadness she felt was because it was all her fault. She had hurt a nice man all because she was still in love with her childhood crush...and her husband knew.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This is an age gap, forbidden romance and I love how VT Do turned this childhood crush into an adult relationship without it turning Max into a disgusting creepy old man.
Even though this story is told in both Max and Lizzie's POVs, you get a deeper understanding of Max and his history. Until the event that merges the stories in this series, there was almost too much focus about his relationship with Olivia, the baby he fell in love as soon as he first held her, even though she wasn't his. But, I do understand that major events throughout this story needed this backstory on Olivia and his brother, Mason. Olivia and Mason's story is in book one, The Young and the Sinner.
Max feels unworthy of Lizzie. First, because of their age difference, but he has secrets...dangerous secrets that he doesn't want to affect Lizzie or her son. Lizzie is struggling with her career choice and whether it will support her son and also trying to get past her anger at her parents.
This book grabbed my attention from page one and I couldn't put the book down. This is a slow burn to smoldering hot romance that has a few unexpected twists. I have only read one other book in this series, but am looking forward to completing the series!
Highly recommend not only this book, but VT Do. She has definitely gained another fan!
