***Synopsis***
You will fall in love with these sassy East Coast spitfires and the men who try to tame them!
Note: Either the girl or the guy in each
couple will have gone to Revere High School at one time.
What is the sub-genre and trope? Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?
The sub-genre is suspense. I really like suspense and mystery and the theme gets stronger as my books go along. I didn’t know this was going to be a series when I wrote the first book, but readers begged for Marsha’s story, and so it begun.
Are you more character or plot driven?
My plot is always in my mind when I begin, but my characters tell me how to get to where I want to be in the end.
With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind? Do you have a story/vision board above your workspace?
I keep a Word doc. Anytime I assign characteristics, locations, names, personality traits etc to a character, it goes in my Word doc. Then I can refer back to it if I need to.
I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own. Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?
I always end up with a character who defies my plans for him/her. In this case, it was Everett. He was going to be the bad guy, but he didn’t want to!
His partner, Henry would have bereft without him and they were too good together to leave one miserable, if that makes sense.
Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you know?
Every character I write has something I’ve taken from life experiences with other people in their makeup.
Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you know?
Same as above. After all, we write what we love…and what we know.
Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?
Probably the scene where Sawyer and Emma are reunited. It wasn’t as I had originally planned at all!
Sometimes you find yourself digging deep for the words to express the emotion you want from your characters. If you shed a tear yourself, you can figure you found it.
What is your favorite book in the series?
I’d have to say Taming the Wind if I had to chose one.
I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?
Now that is really hard! I love all my characters for different reasons.
If I had to pick one in this book, I’d say Emma. She fights so hard for her independence only to end up with an alpha male because that’s just the kind of man she’s drawn too. She’s smart enough to realize she would never be happy with anything else because her strong personality needs an anchor she can rest in when life knocks her around.
Series question - Who is your favorite couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?
I think my favorite couple in the series would be Nat and April. Nat isn’t afraid to let April be the talented detective she is, and she blossoms under his respect, protection and trust.
How do you get inside these characters’ heads to find their perfect HEA?
I give them a problem to solve and they talk to me and solve it based on their personalities.
What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you? Why?
I love the scene in Taming His Feisty Kitten where Marsha shakes up a can of soda and opens it for Oliver, then he does the same to her and pours the rest of the soda down the back of her pants before swatting her.
Always makes me chuckle.
Series - Were any of the books harder to write than others?
Once I begin, they go pretty smoothly. This series has humor and suspense in it, both of which I like. So it’s not to angsty to write.
This question is if you write in MULTIPLE POVs not just the hero and heroine - I love the multiple POVs in a book. It’s not just the hero and heroine, but we get inside the heads of multiple characters throughout this series. I feel that it gives the story further depth. Do you think you will write another book or series following this multiple-POV outline?
I have used multiple POV many times. I like moving into other POVs as well, they enhance the story. And I intend to write more in this series as well.
How long did it take you to write this book/series?
The first one I actually wrote years ago. But the other three have been written within the last two years or so.
I have written other books in between, so haven’t concentrated on completing the series all at once. It’s very open-ended and could go on for a long time.
How did you come up with the title for your book and series?
With the series, I just decided to follow the East Coast where Chessy is from and centralize around the town she lives in, Revere, Maine. And I’m sticking with the Taming in the title to help identify taming those spitfires.
If you met these characters in real life would you get along?
I hope so. lol
Series question – Did you know in advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book one demand their own story?
Readers wanted Marsha’s story from book one, so I branched out. I had no clue it would be a series when I first wrote it.
If your book/series were made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?
Now that is a hard one. I really don’t watch that much television, so I’m not really current on the modern actors. I’d have to think about that one for a while!
Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next? Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series? Can you share a small tease?
I’ll be writing more in this series for sure. Plus, I’ve been playing with a futuristic series. I’ve already written the first book. Just not sure how I want to approach it all yet. Here is a small excerpt from Love Beyond the Stars.
The sound of something scratching slowly brought Colt awake. As his senses sharpened, he realized he was looking at a slender tree limb scraping across glass. His tongue seemed glued to the roof of his mouth and he sucked it off, trying to find some moisture under his tongue and across his teeth. A slight snore sounded a few feet from him and he turned his aching head sideways to see Cal with his head laid back and his mouth open. It was dark, and they were in his truck, he realized. He remembered leaving the bar with Cal passed out over his shoulder and then…
With sudden blinding clarity, it all came rushing back. He and Cal had been kidnapped—by aliens no less!
He jerked his arm up and pushed in the stem on his watch band. It was 1:00 am in the morning. He glanced in the rearview mirror and realized they were still in the parking lot of the Tin Top. The last few customers were stumbling out and he could see Lou turning the “open” sign around to “closed” and locking the door.
Thunder and damnation! They had left the bar around 10:00pm.
That was three hours ago!
Where had they been for three hours?
Worst of all, it looked like Cal had slept through the entire ordeal. That just left him to remember the incident. Those two women, Tia and Louann. They hadn’t given a last name, so no way to track them if this was some trick and they weren’t aliens. Disgruntled, he started the electric engine and headed towards the ranch, trying to remember details.
The room he’d found himself in had been very plain. What few furnishings it had were black leather and chrome. Not even a picture on the wall.
The man who’d been summoned to the room had been pale and drab, except for the flaming red hair combed neatly back on his head. He hadn’t been a very big man as he remembered.
He also remembered seeing what looked like another wall right behind the man, as if he were in a corridor that split off on both sides of him. He’d worn a white lab coat, so had they been in a hospital? Or some sort of laboratory?
Every story he’d ever heard about alien abduction and the horror of it flashed into his mind. He shifted uncomfortably on the seat, checking to see if he had any residual soreness in his lower abdomen and beyond. Then he shook his head at his own foolishness. If anything, it had probably been a mental probe.
The last thing he remembered was looking into Tia’s mind-blowing eyes. She had seemed so sincere—so regretful. She had said she needed his help, but he’d totally blown that off in his fear and anger. He’d always had a quick temper, he mused ruefully. She said he would have been perfect for the job. But what job? Like Cal had remarked earlier, he knew all the questions, he just didn’t know any of the answers.
After getting Cal into the house and into his bed, he went to his office and poured himself a stiff shot of brandy. Crossing to the window, he looked up into the starry, Kansas night sky. Aliens, she had said, but still human. He tipped back his glass, feeling the slight burn as the smooth liquid slid down his throat. No one would ever believe him, least of all Cal and Sam. And they still had to report his theory to the government in the morning.
On a sudden impulse, he slipped out the side door and lifted his glass to the sky in salute. “Here’s to you, baby,” he murmured, wondering if she was looking down on him, spying on him. “For an alien spy, you sure were gorgeous.” He took another drink. “And if I ever get the chance, I’m going to spank that beautiful ass of yours in return for kidnapping me, alien or not.”
He kissed his fingers and blew it towards the sky before he chuckled at the absurdity and turned around to head in. He’d never see her again, that was for sure. Somehow, it made him feel like he’d lost something. How do you lose something you never had?
