Lady Catherine Davenport was being sent to a finishing school in Switzerland to prepare for the marriage market. Everyone her father tried to marry her off to felt she was too bold and opinionated.
She had hoped that being allowed to study alongside her brother meant she would have more choices in her future, but now she is being told she has to marry or her family's future will be ruined since her father had lost several ships carrying valuable cargo bankrupting them.
The last thing she wanted was to spend her life making house calls, having afternoon tea and doing needlepoint, but she also loved her family and knew her duties so she set about packing for her trip.
Catherine was jolted from her sleep as the carriage came to a jarring stop and she peeked out the window to see four masked men holding guns on the driver but before she could grab her derringer from her valise she and her lady's maid are thrown about as the carriage takes off as the driver tries to escape the highwaymen.
James Hastings, the Duke of Pembroke, was out for his morning ride when he sees a carriage shattered on the road before him. Two women are lying on the ground but no one else is in sight. When he returns after sending for the doctor he finds himself facing the now awake young woman aiming her gun at his head.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Catherine was injured in the carriage crash but refuses to tell the Duke her full name instead begging him to let her stay long enough for her ankle to mend so she can continue her travels to Switzerland. Even though getting married is the last thing on her mind she is determined to not let down her family.
The Duke of Pembroke tries to avoid Lady Catherine but the longer she is convalescing the more he likes her spirit and quick wit. His mother has been after him to marry and until now he hasn't met anyone he was willing to settle down with. But when he returns from checking out one of his tenant farms he finds that she has packed up and left with no notice.
This book is action-packed and will keep you turning the pages. Catherine overhears something that has her running and when she meets James again when she is being presented for The Season he is determined to make her his wife. But she is just as determined to avoid him at all costs.
