Aly Ortiz was sitting on the side of the road trying very hard not to cry about her life and the decisions that have her returning home after ten years praying that she is welcome.
Ten years ago she was so happy and just knew that Luke was going to ask her to be his girlfriend officially. What a stupid sixteen-year-old she had been. She had arrived at the school cafeteria only to be stopped at the door by Luke's best friend Blake. Luke had gotten back with his ex-girlfriend. Her response was to throw up all over his shoes... in front of the whole school.
Luke Bradley knocked on the window trying to get the woman's attention to see if he could help when he realized the woman talking to a cat was his biggest regret. When his ex-girlfriend told him she was dying of cancer he did everything in his power to make her last days count. Unfortunately, that hurt the one person who mattered the most.
I really liked Aly and Luke's story. It is well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This is book four of the Piper Falls: Firehouse 49 series of interconnecting stories. Each story has its own HEA and is written by separate authors but the characters and stories are woven through each author's book.
Aly is the younger sister of Estrella (book three) and has been beaten down by life and a boyfriend who did everything short of physical harm. Luke lost the two women who meant the world to him and was determined to never give another woman a chance to shatter his heart.
I love how the stories in this series connect and bring the small town of Piper Falls, Texas to life. Aly had a lot of baggage to unpack from her past and I loved seeing her getting her confidence back enough to trust in love again. Luke was given a second-chance and he was determined not to screw it up this time.
