As luck would have it, I stepped through the veil and found myself in Italy. In some ways, the place was very unchanged over time, and it was easy for me to navigate my way through Rome. Even the hordes of people didn’t detract from the magnificent architecture that still stood representing a very different time.
Every culture held its roots in the very earth it grew from. A distinctness that even the paved streets covering it couldn’t diminish. Below the cobbled and paved roads of Rome were the voices of millions of souls, their spilled blood forever staining the ground. Add to that the hustle and bustle of a city brimming to capacity with people speaking in a plethora of different languages and street vendors. Their carts of fragrant goodies competed with the exhaust from too many tour buses.
My stomach growled, reminding me I hadn’t eaten in eons. Where I’d spent the better part of the last 3,300 years, food was not required. A better way to describe it would be to say that as a being created, I didn’t require food. But stepping through the veil made me all too aware of my body’s needs. I followed my nose to a bistro in the Piazza Navona and sat down to enjoy an exquisite glass of aged Barolo.
She was here, somewhere in Italy, and had recently been in Rome. All immortals left a residue of their unique essence like a DNA calling card. Helen’s was a blend of golden light with a primary aroma of vanilla with hints of sage and thyme. Her scent was reminiscent of the sun coming out after a rainstorm, a light in the dark’s aftermath.
The only way I could be here is she’d been here. As the veil wasn’t a location but more a time continuum between planes, the seeker, me in this case, would be close to the object of their desire, Helen in my case. She was here, but my gut told me not here in Rome. So if I wasn’t here for her, despite that being what I sought, then someone brought me here. Engrossed in people watching as I was, I missed the familiar waft of bergamot until it was directly before me.
“Hello, Pollux. Where’s your other half?”
An almost replica of my beautiful Helen dropped into the chair opposite mine. Currently dressed as a runway model. Pollux had a twin brother named Castor, and they were Helen’s brothers from a different father. Yeah, nothing was ever simple with the immortals.
