On the advice of one of her cousins, Cassandra started a diary. She just needed a place to hide it from her mother who would have a heart attack if she ever got a hold of the diary. Because her discussions with her diary totally relate to sex and her questions and experiences. These were definitely thoughts that shouldn't be said out loud.
"Hard member....maidenhead..." she was reading from the paperback that her best friend Shawna had grabbed from her foster mother's hidden stash. They looked at each other in confusion having no clue what they were reading and wondered if all the hidden books were that silly.
They were fourteen years old and between their biology and health classes, they were slowly able to understand the book descriptions and were kind of grossed out because the health class diagrams were disgusting and they didn't want that anywhere near them.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Although there are tons of secondary characters in this book it is told solely from Cassandra's POV from fourteen until her high school graduation.
Cassandra comes from a Greek family that is full of rules about girls and what is and isn't allowed. Have to marry a Greek boy and can't have sexual relations until marriage...when they are 25. They aren't even allowed to have a boyfriend until they are eighteen. They aren't allowed to get a driver's license until they are seventeen and tons of other rules that Cassandra questions very loudly.
She has no plans to stay in her small town and work in her family's restaurant for the rest of her life. She has goals and getting married and popping out babies are not on the list. Her goal is Chicago...no matter what her parents think.
This book is action-packed from cover to cover and you will laugh at Cassandra's views on private issues, body parts and giving birth. This book is not intended for younger readers as it is definitely full of adult content. Highly recommend it and can't wait to see what college has in store for Cassandra.
