Pulling me from my thoughts, Stefen tapped my hand with his fork. I turned my head to him, a smile on my face. “How’s the food?” I asked him.

“It’s the best meal I’ve had in a long time. Possibly even better than my mother’s, but don’t tell her I said that. I would like to stay on her good side.” He smirked. “This cider is amazing though. Your recipe?” He took a long pull from the glass.

I couldn’t help but stare. He’d drunk the cider. And now he was complimenting my cooking. Was it him talking or was it the power of the cider? I’d been drinking it too. But I’ve drank it every year and I’ve never had someone drawn to me afterward. You have also never looked at a man the way you look at him, said the voice in my head. Could this be what we needed all along to move from friends to more? Did he want more? No. He was just being his normal nice self. Stefen did not want me as anything more than a good friend. He even said so before dinner, “may the new friendship only get stronger.” He was here as a friend, nothing more.

Pulling me from my reverie, I shook my head and pointed to the other end of the table. “It is Nana’s award winning, special recipe apple cider.”

He twisted his head to look at Nana. She was sitting there beaming, looking between Stefen and me. She knew what was running through my head because the next words out of her mouth were, “This is the recipe that made my late husband fall in love with me.”

Stefen’s eyebrows raised in surprise. He looked back at me and then toward her again. Nana continued, “It was at the Fall Festival about fifty years ago. I took this recipe and entered it into the apple cider contest. Well back then, there were no real judges, just the people walking around the fairgrounds. Each sample earned a vote and the one with the most votes won.” She paused and took a sip of the cider sitting in front of her. “There was this boy in my English class that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I was smitten. The problem was, he didn’t know who I was, or so I thought.” Again, she paused for a drink. “I was never one to let on that I fancied a boy, mind you, but there was no hiding from him. I had been drinking this cider all day, hoping that what my momma told me was true and not some old wives’ tale. Halfway through that night, my Edward came marching up to my table, pulled me into his arms and kissed me like I’d never been kissed before. We graduated that following spring and married that summer.”
