Sara was on her way to a tailgate party with her roommate Amy and Derek, who they had both met the day before at the freshman orientation. She was determined to fit in at college and make friends.
Her parents both died in a car accident when she was twelve and she still had nightmares about the accident where a deer had run in front of their car. She was lucky that her mom's best friend Abigail was able to become her guardian or she has no idea what would have happened to her.
Derek had talked them into joining him at the tailgate as he wanted to scope out some fraternities that he hoped would be there. Derek gave them both a beer and she gingerly took a sip trying not to show how disgusted she thought it was.
While Derek was off checking out a fraternity booth and Amy hit the restroom two obnoxiously drunk frat jerks started hitting on her, but she wasn't interested in a relationship and especially with these guys.
When they finally left her she is people-watching when she notices a gorgeous girl wearing an obviously designer outfit approaching a built guy...like really built. She couldn't take her eyes off him. And when he turns around to acknowledge the girl the breath is knocked out of her. He is the most gorgeous man she has ever seen. Those two would be the perfect king and queen of every prom.
As Amy whispers that she's giving this another five minutes before leaving someone grabs Sara's rear making her jerk and her beer fly out of her hand...and land on the girl drenching her designer outfit. Oh, no! She didn't need enemies the first day of school.
I love this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. What an amazing story. Sara is on her own for the first time and deliberately enrolled in a college away from home to prove she could handle being on her own. After losing her parents in a horrible car accident she needed to deal with her PTSD and get out of her comfort zone.
Scott is every girl's dream and Sara is amazed that he seems interested in her. But, not everyone is happy for them and she starts getting threats to keep away from him...or else.
This book is action-packed from word one and I couldn't put it down once I started reading. There is plenty of angst and drama to keep your interest. I love Sara and Amy's friendship - they couldn't be further apart in personality and appearance, but this is the type of friend everyone needs.
It is full of betrayal, danger, suspense and smoking-hot sexual content. I do want to give a trigger warning about an issue of non-consent. Although this book is part of a duet, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger. Highly recommend this book and can't wait to continue Sara and Scott's story!
