REVIEW - COURT OF BITTER THORN by Kay L Moody

While her father is more determined to find her a husband, Elora is only interested in how to sneak in to fight in a tournament.  As she and her sisters, Chloe and Grace, are walking in their village Elora hears a tournament and rushes to get a peek.  But the organizer sees her and warns her that if she ever tried to compete he would enjoy killing her.

When they are walking back to their home they become aware of the smell of smoke.  Hoping that there are travelers nearby who came to watch the tournament, they start running and their worst nightmare is before them.  Their home and father's forge are burnt to the ground and both of their parents are dead.

The responsibility of taking care of her younger sisters weighs heavily on Elora's shoulders and she sends a messenger to let her betrothed know that she will marry him sooner than the wedding date set for six weeks time.  In the meantime, the bookstore owner will allow them to stay with her until her nuptials.

When Elora realizes that she only has a few coins left she offers to collect a barrel of apples for the baker if he would supply bread and meat pies until her marriage.  When she arrives at the apple tree and is struggling to climb the tree she is distracted and mesmerized by the sight of the most perfect man she has ever seen.  And he wants to make her a bargain.  He wants her to train him how to fight with a sword.

Prince Brannock wants to make a bargain.  He will give her wings so that she may collect the apples if she agrees to come to Bitter Thorn and help him become High King.  Seeing an adventure better than fighting in a tournament Elora agrees.  When Elora realizes that she was tricked and couldn't get back to her sisters, she decides to sabotage Prince Brannock's plans to return to her sisters.

I loved this book!  It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable.  This is book one of the Fae of Bitter Thorn series, but I would suggest that you read the prequel first.

This book draws you immediately into a world of fantasy.  Prince Brannock's court was cursed when his mother had opened a door to the mortal world.  The only way to reverse the curse is to become High King and he wants to train to fight with a sword in secret to give him an advantage in gaining the position as High King.

Elora is determined to return to the mortal world before her sisters are kicked to the curb and starve and tries to find a loophole in her bargain.  I love all of the characters in this fae world.  Elora is learning the hard way to watch how she speaks as she can unknowingly enter into a bargain that can't be reversed.

This book is full of action, tragedy and danger.  I was immediately drawn into this enchanting story and can't wait to read the next book in the series.
