Elora made a bargain with Prince Brannock to leave the mortal world to help him win the competition to be the next High King. The current High King's son had unknowingly poisoned his food and he was dying.
Everyone in Fae knows that Prince Brannock was the true High King, but his court had been cursed and his mother was killed when she opened a portal to the mortal world. Since no one in his court trained with swords he knew training in secret would give him the upper hand and who better to teach him but the daughter of a master.
Prince Brannock won both phases one and two and the winner got to decide the tournament weapon. The final phase was between him and Queen Alessandra, but Queen Alessandra put an enchantment on Prince Brannock so he decided to have a proxy fight for him. Elora would fight in the tournament.
Although Elora won the fight and Prince Brannock was the winner of the crown, Queen Alessandra was able to speak before the High King announced his decision. And because of the bargain he had made, Queen Alessandra tricked Prince Brannock into telling the High King that she was the better choice.
Elora had made a bargain with Queen Alessandra before the tournament that she had to tell her how to break Prince Brannock's bargain by the end of the day. When the Queen handed her a golden shard Elora made the sacrifice needed to free him from the bargain. The shard would turn her from human to fae, but no one had ever lived through the pain of the process.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Elora, Prince Brannock and all of the secondary characters in this story are amazing. Elora's life becomes more dangerous as she fights to save Bitter Thorn and the rest of Fae from Queen Alessandra and her determination to dominate all of Fae.
This book is action-packed, full of danger and intrigue and will keep you turning the pages. Kay L Moody has woven an amazing story in this world of fantasy!
