INTERVIEW with SCARLETT AVERY

I want to thank Scarlett Avery for taking the time for this interview!

BIO:

Scarlett’s obsession with rich and powerful men started with the movie The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). To this day, it’s one of the handful of movies she’s watched more than once.

She’s tried to write other type of heroes, but she’s come to discover that rich, domineering alphas are her favourite characters.

The Thomas Crown Affair also influenced the type of female character she writes. Only smart, sassy, and vulnerable heroines are brave enough to bring these powerful men down to their knees.

USA TODAY and Amazon TOP 21 bestselling author Scarlett Avery unapologetically pens all-consuming love stories featuring smoking hot filthy rich book boyfriends who have the determination of a thousand warriors. Her heroines are smart and sassy. And you should always expect edge-of-your-seat twists.

Scarlett’s stories are intense and passionate, emotional and steamy, and always leave you begging for more.

Scarlett spends her private days in the North Pole (aka Canada).

She’s a polyglot (she speaks numerous languages). She has a serious love affair with Italian gelato, ice cream, pound cake, white chocolate and Macadamia nut cookies, peanut butter cookies, and martinis. She could live off French or Italian charcuterie and cheese boards. California Chardonnay?

When and how did you know you wanted to be a writer?

It's a fluke. I'm not one of those authors who had aspirations to be an author since she was five.

Did you have any influencing writers growing up?

No.

Are any of your characters based on people in real life?

Some side characters are. When readers join my newsletter, one of the post describes which characters are from real life.

Where do you draw your book inspirations from?

So many different areas such as books, TV, music, walking around, an idea that popped into my head, films, washing dishes, taking a shower. It seems water always Sparks new ideas – – Hands washing dishes and taking a shower.

Do you use have a basic outline when starting a new story or do you let the characters lead the way?

The outline stems from the characters.

When you are picturing the characters in your book, do you have a cheater photo for inspiration?

Sometimes I have a muse. Sometimes I don't.

Many people read as a form of escape and relaxation. What is your favorite way to sit back and relax?

Audiobooks. And I cannot to sit back, but walk around.

Who are your favorite current authors to read?

My favorite genre is mystery thriller. So I'm quite partial to Jason Bourne type books. Those are my favorites. Although I'm a romance author.

Do the locations in the stories have any meaning to you?

They don't have a meaning to me. They have a meaning to the characters.

Do you write in single or multiple POV?

The first few books were written in single POV. But I changed that many years ago. Now, all my books are dual POV.

What do you find to be your best research tool?

Reading other books. Watching series. Watching films.

Do you write under a pen name? Also, do you write under more than one name?

I write as Scarlett Avery.

What genre do you write and why is this your preference?

Romance.

Some of us are lucky in love, but a lot of people crave love (even people in relationships). And when they do, it's never like it is in romance books. In romance, there's no cheating, the good guys always win, all problems are solved, and at the end of the day, you meet your soulmate and you're lucky enough to spend the rest of your life with him.

Tell me something about yourself outside of writing. Jobs, accomplishments, family, quirky trait...what led to you being you?

I don't like chocolate, which is something that shocks most people.

What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

This is a difficult question.

Being an author is more than a one, two, three list. Especially, being an indie author. I guess my best advice would be don't think of a book, think of your brand before you start writing.

How do you deal and process negative book reviews?

Like most authors, I don't read them.

What is the most difficult part of your writing process?

Every aspect of writing is hard. Sitting down in front of a blank word document it coming up with 100,000 words is hard. Doing it over, and over, and over again, is hard.

What do you need in your writer’s space to keep you focused?

Silence.

What is your naughty indulgence as you are writing?

I don't have any.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose? And why?

I wouldn't choose one particular author, but I would choose to step into the shoes of an author that has gone viral on TikTok and have an army of people pushing their books all day long, while they get to solely focus on writing books. I'd love to know what that feels like.

Do you listen to music when you write – what kind of music is your favorite?

No. Because I dictate my books.

Have pets ever gotten in the way of your writing?

I don't have any.

What is your kryptonite as a writer? What totally puts you off your game?

When you write yourself in a corner.

Have you ever killed off a character that your readers loved?

No.

How do you celebrate after typing THE END?

I'm terrible at this. I don't celebrate enough. Honestly, I rarely celebrate. Once the book is written, you have to think of editing, cover, graphic design, promotion, release dates, the next book, so, so, so many things.
