***Synopsis***
It is a young adult sci-fi dystopian where there is a totalitarian government that abducts these kids to experiment on them. Well, it subsequently gives the kids superpowers, so the kids then use these superpowers to try and fight back against that government. I plan on making this a trilogy following Jett(the main character)with his sister Maggie and others as they fight back against the evil Space Federation.
What is the sub-genre and trope? Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?
I would say that the sub-genre is a toss up between dystopia and space opera. Right from the get go I had an overall idea of what style I wanted to approach for this book.
Are you more character or plot driven?
At the start of writing this I would say I was more plot driven, but as the characters began to form into their own I took a step back and let them tell their story. I mean it is theirs afterall.
With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind? Do you have a story/vision board above your workspace?
I try to give each of my characters their own voice and personalities. It’s like with dungeons and dragons (DnD), you have to give time and space for each player or npc to speak and take the stage, so I basically just imagine fully being that person and what it is they might say or do in whatever situation they are in.
I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own. Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?
Haha only all of my characters decided to completely change from how originally imagined them to be or act.
Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you know?
I would sheepishly say that the main character, Jett, is slightly based off of myself other than that no.
Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you know?
I don’t believe they are, except maybe Maggie, Jett’s sister, might be a reflection of what it was like growing up with my two older sisters and the silly fights we would’ve had.
Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?
There is one scene towards the end with Jett and the BBEG (big bad evil guy) that was hard for me to write but it was a scene I felt that needed to be done in order to progress the story where I needed it to go.
What is your favorite book in the series?
Sadly so far I only have just the one out for right now but I am excited to see just where this overall story goes!
I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?
Hands down Maggie. She has such a fiery spirit and personality that I just can’t help but be amazed by. Plus her super power is one of my absolute favorites.
Series question - Who is your favorite couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?
Oh that’s a tough call. I like the flirtyness from Rhyker and Maggie and I also really adore the shy bashful side of Jett and Siren so a bit of both I would say.
How do you get inside these characters’ heads to find their perfect HEA?
Like I said before I just try to picture what it is that character might say or do and go from there.
What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you? Why?
For me it has to be when they get their new robot companion and the entire outcome of that still has me mentally laughing.
Series - Were any of the books harder to write than others?
So far not exactly. The only difficult part I have is just finding the time to in a busy life with raising children and having a full time job.
How long did it take you to write this book/series?
For this book I had started it about 8 years ago and then well life got busy with job changes and lifestyle changes but it wasn’t until the birth of my first daughter that I decided to pick up where I left off and after a few years it fully grew into the story I wanted it to be.
How did you come up with the title for your book and series?
The overall title came to me shortly after I started writing and at first I didn’t exactly like the title, so it wasn’t until I got the subtitle in mind that I fully loved the overall series title.
If you met these characters in real life would you get along?
Haha I feel like me and Jett wouldn’t have too much to talk about, however Zalen is somebody I would love to just sit down and have him chat away because he, I feel, has an abundance of things to talk about.
Series question – Did you know in advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book one demand their own story?
Right from the beginning I knew I wanted it to be a series. All of my favorite books themselves have been series and I find it’s hard to just end everyone’s story within just one book.
If your book/series were made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?
I couldn’t say for sure who would make good actors for my characters, but if I were to see it come to life I am entirely sure that the director would not disappoint with their choices.
Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next? Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series? Can you share a small tease?
Sure! Currently I am working on a fantasy adventure style book right now that I do also plan to make into a series.
I also plan to be bouncing back between the two titles so as to keep both series going.
As for a small snippet, let’s just say there will be an abundance of sword fighting, magic and all the wonderful things that go with a fantasy world!
