Ric never expected to be medically discharged from the Navy. He never expected to receive the Purple Heart. Being a SEAL was what he was good at. And he most definitely never thought that he would be working as an enforcer for the New York mob boss Frank Russo.
His Uncle Marco told him that he was applying to guard the front door at the nightclub Lock, but then he had the unfortunate pleasure of saving Mr. Russo's life as a sniper took a shot when leaving through the back door of the club.
Now he was guarding another door. Only this door wasn't giving people access to a club. This door was to keep them from leaving the nightmare that was now their life. But after seeing Mr. Russon kill a man in front of his own eight-year-old son Ric knew the threat against his own mother's life was not something he wanted to chance.
It was the last day of school and Erin and a few of her co-workers were going to Lock to blow off some steam and to celebrate the end of the school year. Her friend was drooling at the guy at the door who had to be the hottest man she had ever seen, but didn't want to approach him for his number.
Erin approached him to let him know that her friend was interested and he laughed saying that if Erin was the one interested he was more than happy to give his number and let them into the club with a smile. Several hours later Erin needed to get home to her boyfriend and as the taxi pulled away from the curb she looked back at the gorgeous bouncer thinking if it wasn't for Stephen she would have taken him up on his offer.
Erin looked up and realized that instead of her apartment building the taxi was in front of a warehouse. When she protested that this wasn't her building he informed her it was her new home as she was yanked out of the backseat kicking and screaming.
She looked around her in horror when she saw dozens of cages filled with women and she was the newest captive.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Even though this book has its own HEA this series is intended to be read in order. Books one and two have interconnecting moments in each book that connect them even more than revolving around the mob boss Frank Russo. The events are just told from another point of view bringing more depth and understanding to the series.
Ric is the head of security for the mob, but not by choice. But he is determined to take down Frank Russo especially after walking into the warehouse and looking into the outraged eyes of the woman he flirted with at the club earlier that evening.
This dark romance is action-packed and full of violence, human trafficking and non-consent as the 'lucky' women who weren't sold at auction were put to work in a penthouse brothel. Ric had promised for years to figure out how to end the nightmare until one night that changed it all. Unlike book one of this series, this is not a fairytale retelling although it is definitely a nightmare for the women unfortunate enough to cross Frank Russo's path.
If you like dark and deviant mafia romance you will love this series! Highly recommend!
