The Bear Claw Tales are my books surrounding 4 growly Bear Shifter Brothers in my fictional town of Barvale, New Jersey.
Meet the Devlin brothers, Marcus, Daniel,
Taylor and Nate, four Bear Shifters on the hunt for their one true mates!
Owners and operators of the famous Bear Claw Bakeries, these growly men need to
hurry and find their mates before their wild side becomes too much to bear!
What is the sub-genre and trope? Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?
Almost all of my series are primarily paranormal romances with elements of urban fantasy, humor, and action mixed in. All of my books are under what I call the Grazi Kelly Universe, named for my first ever heroine, you can check her out for free in Wolf Moon books2read.com/gk1.
The Bear Claw Tales are fated mate paranormal romances with all the growly angst you can expect from a PNR book featuring alpha shifters and their curvy mates.
Are you more character or plot driven?
Definitely character driven as all of my books are romances first. Each story focuses on the main characters, but I love to throw in some cameos from past couples, references to towns or business, and you can count on my home state of NJ being either a setting or the birthplace for one or both MCs.
In Bearly Breathing, we have an Alpha Black Bear whose inner animal is getting testy because of his unmated status. In other words, he needs to find his fated mate and fast. He just wasn’t counting on discovering her in a curvy human while on a business trip to one of his new bakery locations.
With many main and secondary
characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind? Do you have a story/vision board above your
workspace?
I do have a sheet where I try and write everything and everyone down to keep tabs, but with over one hundred stories published it can get messy. LOL.
The Bear Claw Tales focus on four brothers, but the Clan just kept on growing and before I knew it I had three series based on them.
I know from previous interviews that
characters take on a life of their own.
Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own
direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?
Marcus Devlin is this larger than life alpha male, but he wants to be a good leader. It was interesting to see his character grow and develop once he met his mate. It was like all the pieces clicked for him, and I loved seeing Leya step into her new role with confidence and grace. These two are absolute favorites of mine.
Are any of the male POVs based on
anyone you know?
I don’t think it’s possible to not base characters on people we know. Marcus is a mixture of that and what I would like to see in a true Alpha male.
Are any of the female POVs based on
anyone you know?
Leya is the personification of every confidant and friend I had growing up. She is a curvy girl and struggles with self-esteem for a little bit in this story. It was awesome to see her take charge of her life and love herself.
Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?
Not in this series. The Bear Claw Tales just really came together for me at a time when I was just starting out with paranormal romance. These stories are fun, fast-paced, and swoonworthy.
What is your favorite book in the
series?
Hard to say as I love them all, but Bearly Tamed might be my favorite.
It is book 3 in the series and I just love the idea of the man who hates women falling for a supermodel down on her luck.
I know that we aren’t supposed to have
“favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite
character and why?
LOL. This is actually easier to answer than you think. All of them. And no it is not cheating because not at once.
Whoever I am working on tends to be my favorite at that time. This way, they all really have been my faves at one time or other.
Series question - Who is your favorite
couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?
Marcus and Leya are an awesome power couple, and this book just sets them up for the other series they pop in to make cameos and check on their clan.
They are the Alphas, but even those mega strong personality having characters are vulnerable at times and this book shows that.
How do you get inside these
character’s heads to find their perfect HEA?
I do a lot of my work cerebrally, so thinking is like 85% of my writing process. After that, I am already in my characters’ heads so writing the perfect ending doesn’t take all that much effort cause I already have it locked up in my noggin.
What scene in this book/series sticks
out the most for you? Why?
There is a scene when Marcus sees Leya and is horrified by her bad choice in clothing. It still makes me LOL.
Series - Were any of the books harder
to write than others?
I think a lot about destiny and what it means to be an author when I write. I truly believe this is a calling, so no, I can’t say this is hard work or that any one book was harder than the others, but I do work very hard.
Every book is like chiseling at my soul and banging it with that hammer until it turns into language. So, yeah, they are all kind of hard.
This question is if you write in
MULTIPLE POVs not just the hero and heroine - I love the multiple POVs in a
book. It’s not just the hero and heroine,
but we get inside the heads of multiple characters throughout this series. I feel that it gives the story further
depth. Do you think you will write
another book or series following this multiple POV outline?
I sometimes include a third POV in the prologue of a book, otherwise head-hopping can be a bit dangerous for writers, especially romance writers.
How long did it take you to write this
book/series?
I don’t really know since I believe I start writing when I start thinking and that means could have been well over a year in the making.
How did you come up with the title for
your book and series?
Oooh, those I tend to get on inspiration when creating the cover image.
If you met these characters in real
life would you get along?
I’d probably be drooling over the guys, but I sure hope so.
Series question – Did you know in
advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the
characters in book one demand their own story?
Yes, I knew this would be a series because of the brother element. I did not plan on the spin offs, but I can’t seem to stop writing them! lol
If your book/series were made into a
movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?
I’d love Katherine Heigl as Leya and Liam Hemsworth as Marcus.

can expect next? Whether a new book and
series or a sequel to an existing series?
