Inhabited by various creatures, the magical world of Testatha has existed in peace since the White Crystal, which can open rifts between worlds, has been lost. This is until a rumor surfaces that twenty-two years after the crystal shook the world, it has been found again and hidden…
Natka Roqueze has never been anything special. To be precise: she isn’t even sure who or what she is. All she knows is that her depression is getting out of control, and that she might find the answer to her pain, when she finds the White Crystal.
But who has it? The humans might wield it, to banish all magic. The angels might have it, so that they can return to Heaven. The Fae might keep it, to rule the world. The daimons, including the gorgeous but dangerous Devton, might use it for personal gain.
Everyone in this world has secrets. Everyone has something they want to hide. With death and danger looming over the Clepsydra Society, depending on the White Crystal’s untamed power, Natka will have to find the artefact before the world suffers the consequences of someone beating her to it.
What is the sub-genre and trope? Did your characters lead you to this genre or
was that decided before the story began?
The genre is fantasy, subgenre is mystery and trope is magic. This was all decided before I began writing or thinking about who the characters would be.
Are you more character or plot driven?
Plot-driven.
With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep
them separated in your mind? Do you have
a story/vision board above your workspace?
It’s easy to keep them separated in my mind because they’re often based on real people. I do create character sketches as well and I keep them close when I write.
I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own. Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?
In the end Ryker went a slightly different direction that I thought he would. I don’t want to say too much as to avoid spoilers!
Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you know?
There are no male POVs in this book as it is a first person POV, by Natka.
Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you know?
Not in Lapidary. Natka isn’t based on anyone, but instead she has different characteristics from different people that I know.
Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?
Devton was harder to write because he feels unlovable, which isn’t something I’ve felt or had to deal with.
This meant I had to do a bit more psychology research to understand how and why such a person would feel.
What is your favorite book in the series?
I think Saliency was slightly better than Lapidary.
I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?
Devton Embers!
He is my favorite because he loves and accepts Natka just as she is. She doesn’t have to make herself small in order for him to feel strong.
Series question - Who is your favorite couple and why did you decide on their dynamics?
Natka and Devton! I decided on their dynamics because they both have a way of looking at each other and seeing the deeper things.
How do you get inside these character’s heads to find their perfect HEA?
I generally write character sketches where I sum up their hopes, fears, dreams and past.
When I understand these things it becomes easier to understand and predict them.
What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you? Why?
The scene that sticks out the most for me is the scene where the Crystal has been found.
Natka realizes what Devton kept from her and she verbally attacks him.
Series - Were any of the books harder to write than others?
Both books were easy to write.
How long did it take you to write this book/series?
Each book took around four months.
How did you come up with the title for your book and series?
The book is about Ryker who collects stones (including the white crystal which can open rifts between worlds.)
That made me think Lapidary (a person who cuts, polishes and engraves gems), would be a good fit. [Reading by Deb comment - Just a non-book related comment...I am a jeweler and have my own lap machine, although I have only cut one crystal 💖]
If you met these characters in real life would you get along?
Yes! I think we’d be really good friends.
Series question – Did you know in advance that you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book one demand their own story?
I knew in advance that it would be two books. I’m still deciding if there will be a third.
If your book/series were made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?
Margot Robbie - Natka
Evan Peters – Devton Embers
Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next? Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series? Can you share a small tease?
Hiding in Vesea, after daimons arrived from the Netherworld and angels returned to Heaven, isn’t easy for Natka. To make matters worse, Ryker has once again hidden the White Crystal – proof of the broken trust between them, and Natka can’t remain out of sight forever.
The daimons are ready to take control of a world where a fragile piece exists between them, the fae, and the merfolk. Can Nat rely on anyone? Regardless of trust, she will have to take the White Crystal to the Edge of the World, where she must throw it away so that no one can ever use it again. The problem is, she can’t do it alone…
This quest presents new twists and turns, unforeseen challenges, and dark truths. Natka will be forced to make decision which might cost her everything and change the world.

Mermaid. Heroine. Actress. Assassin. Princess. Dragon rider.
Tayla Jean Grossberg was all of these things as a child—she had overactive imagination. She grew up on a game ranch in South Africa, among animals such as leopards, buffalo, zebras, and giraffes.
She expanded her horizons by traveling to America and Europe. Her experiences, the people she meets, the places she visits, and the animals she loves inspire her to write novels. Now Tayla spends her time reading, writing, and continuing her crazy adventures.
The only thing she can’t do is reach the top shelf.
