Allie is running through the woods to her and her cousin Everly's favorite spot. As soon as her father arrived home her mother told her to hide. Her dad started yelling at her mom asking why she had left the house. He didn't listen to her explanation that she needed to go to the grocery store and slapped her so hard she landed on the floor.
So she did what her mother said and ran. Praying that her mother would be safe. Praying for her own safety and freedom from the horror of her childhood. Her cousin dreamed of poisoning her father and then they could run away and begin again. When she finally arrived back home she was soaked from being out in the cold and rain.
She remembers her mother putting her to bed to tend her fever, but when she awoke her father told her that her mother had stolen the truck and left in the middle of the night. Leaving her 'little mouse' behind with a monster.
Allie is twenty-four and was finally free. Something she didn't think would ever happen. She is standing in front of a gallery window mesmerized by the artwork she would never be able to afford when she sees her father's reflection as he stomps down the street in a rage.
She rushes between the buildings and presses against the wall hoping that he didn't see her. She has managed to avoid being anywhere near him in the last year since she escaped the monster that was her father. She is gasping in air trying not to have a panic attack when she hears a noise and looks up. It's not her father but it doesn't make her feel any better.
It is Everly's soon-to-be brother-in-law, Beckett. He was always kind but he always overwhelmed her when she was in his presence.
She has been staying at Beckett's brother Hayes's farmhouse since he had moved in with Everly. She has so many things on her wish list. She has no schooling and didn't even know how to drive, but she was determined to be able to support herself and not be a burden.
Beckett was back in his hometown to take over the medical practice. He had left home and joined Aid International and had let the guilt keep him away. Hadley had been hurt because of him. He was supposed to be watching her at the fair, but he had left her to go chasing after a girl. He didn't think he could ever forgive himself.
But, he needed to move out. His mother was driving him crazy especially after she went in his drawers and folded his underwear. So Hayes asked him to move in with Allie since it was such a large house while his house was being built.
I loved this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. I listened to Allie and Beckett's story in audiobook format and Ava Erickson and Sebastian York did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.
This book is action-packed from word one. It is full of danger and suspense as Allie fights for her life. This is a slow-burn romance with plenty of heat. This book can be read as a standalone, but the characters are recurring and I suggest starting from the beginning of the series to get the full background of all the secondary characters and how their stories blend together.
