The Dragon Scale Princess. It’s a short story that’s being featured in a Fairytale Retelling themed anthology entitled Under Your Spell.

It’s a retelling of Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess. With more details on character backgrounds, personal growth, with added elements of magic and romance.

What is the sub-genre and trope?  Did your characters lead you to this genre or was that decided before the story began?

I guess the closest trope is enemies to lovers, and that was definitely already decided before the story began.

Are you more character or plot driven?

Character for sure! They’re the ones always keeping me up at night.

With many main and secondary characters, how do you keep them separated in your mind?  Do you have a story/vision board above your workspace?

Being a short story, there aren’t too many secondary characters. I don’t have any vision or aesthetic boards.

Best way to describe it is a movie in my mind. I set the scene and certain details stand out more than others and I try to focus on what’s relevant, useful, and memorable in each of the characters.

I know from previous interviews that characters take on a life of their own.  Were any of the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of where you initially wanted them to go?

When I originally planned out The Dragon Scale Princess, it was supposed to be novel length.

For the anthology, I instead made it a short story. I’m sure if it was longer, a few characters would’ve had more opportunity to go off script, but not enough to change their outcome.

Are any of the male/female POVs based on anyone you know?

No.

Was there any one character/scene that was harder to write about than the other?

The hardest part for me to write was the last two chapters. There is so much happening, and a lot to resolve, and I was worried I was going to over the word limit.

I know that we aren’t supposed to have “favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite character and why?

Aunt Jausteen.

She has a whole backstory of heartbreak and intrigue. She’s strong, but not in an intense way. Opinionated but also logical.

How do you get inside these character’s heads to find their perfect HEA?

Princess Lizabet was pretty easy based on the character in The Paper Bag Princess.

A hopeless romantic, a bit naive, yet willing to fight and sacrifice everything for those she loves. And there’s still a cleverness about her so there’s more than meets the eye. She’s not letting anyone or anything ruin her HEA!

What scene in this book/series sticks out the most for you?  Why?

I think the prologue.

In some ways, I could have used it to go deeper into the main male character’s backstory, but I couldn’t stop imagining an old, ancient woman sitting in a run down shack with a small dragon. And that little dragon’s life was about to change.

How long did it take you to write this book?

6 months.

How did you come up with the title for your book and series?

Well, I knew it had to be an obvious homage to the original Tale that it’s based on.

And yes, true to this new title, the Princess flies into battle wearing dragon scaled armor.

If you met these characters in real life would you get along?

Some more than others for sure.

If your book was made into a movie, which actors do you see as playing your characters?

This is a tough one! In previous WIPs, I have more than a few celebrity muses that I visualize perfectly as characters… but not for this one oddly enough.

Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect next?  Whether a new book and series or a sequel to an existing series?  Can you share a small tease?

Personally, I don’t have much going on after this project gets released. I’d like to get a jump on edits and get one of my dark mob romances query ready.

As for The New Romance Cafe, who is publishing Under Your Spell, they have more exciting stuff on the way. Hopefully soon, I’ll join them again in another one of their anthologies.
