THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY
Carolina Cowboy
Get a behind-the-scenes all-access pass to Becke Turner's Carolina Cowboy, book two of the A Clocktower Romance Series!
***Synopis***
Carolina Cowboy like all Clocktower Romances is set in Sunberry, North Carolina.
City girl Lil McGovern returns home to the family ranch after a ten-year absence to sell the ranch and take her ailing father home with her. Too bad, her estranged father and his new partner, the cowboy she left behind, refuse to listen to reason.
What is the sub-genre and trope?
Southern small town, cowboy reunion story.
Did your characters lead you to this genre or
was that decided before the story began?
This story depicted many of my experiences as a cattle rancher in Missouri.
Are you more character or plot driven?
Character
With many main and secondary characters, how do
you keep them separated in your mind? Do
you have a story/vision board above your workspace?
I use an XLS spreadsheet to record, characters, scenes, and details I’d never remember without help.
I know from previous interviews that characters
take on a life of their own. Were any of
the characters in this series determined to take their own direction instead of
where you initially wanted them to go?
The character who gave me the most heartburn was Lil’s dad. I wanted to depict the difficulties with caring for an aging parent, especially an estranged parent.
Are any of the male POVs based on anyone you
know?
I tried to imagine my father, who was a force of nature, facing the debilitating effects of a stroke and worried he’d lose everything he’d spent a lifetime of building.
Are any of the female POVs based on anyone you
know?
I think all of my female characters may have a little piece of me. The traits I try to overcome and the traits I aspire to learn.
Was there any one character/scene that was
harder to write about than the other?
The ending was difficult because I wanted to depict a more realistic view of ranch life. And that’s all I can share without spoiling the read.
I know that we aren’t supposed to have
“favorites” as far as our children, but seriously, who’s your favorite
character and why?
I enjoyed writing Lil because she was compelled to overcome so much. In the end, it was her business sense over intense emotion that prevailed.
How do you get inside these character’s heads
to find their perfect HEA?
Authors have to continually ask themselves based on what this character wants, how would they react and why.
What scene in this book/series sticks out the
most for you? Why?
The scenes depict the struggles of ranchers. Raising cattle is a 24-hour job and the people who do it endure many hardships.
Series - Were any of the books harder to write
than others?
For me, every book is hard to write.
How long did it take you to write this
book/series?
3 years to date
How did you come up with the title for your
book?
Readers tend to think of cowboys only in the west.
I wanted the title to indicate this isn’t a western book. It’s a rancher in the east. There are many cattle ranches in the east and Midwest. However, they are often smaller.
If you met these characters in real life would
you get along?
Yes.
Series question – Did you know in advance that
you were going to write this as a series or did one of the characters in book
one demand their own story?
This story was originally set in Missouri where our ranch was located. I revised to fit with the Clocktower Series.
Can you give us a hint as to what we can expect
next? Whether a new book and series or a
sequel to an existing series? Can you
share a small tease?
I have two additional cowboy stories.
However, I’m considering a new cowboy series.
Considering. Who knows? It could happen.

The day of his partner’s stroke, Cody Barnfield’s plans circle the manure pile. Then Lil proposes to sell the ranch to fund her dad’s therapy and torches the mess. She might as well trade her dad’s land for his heart and soul. Cody should know. She traded his heart for a fancy life in the city. But just because he has to work with her doesn’t mean he’ll fall for her again. This cowboy knows his limitations.
Standing six feet tall in ballet flats, Lil has shouldered her way through the corporate world, but her family problem has a three-week fuse and two bull-headed cowboys in her path. There’s certainly no time for physical attraction—like that matters to the stinking cows or her foolish heart.
If you like a second chance romance with a courageous woman willing to risk everything for her land and loved ones, you’ll enjoy Becke Turner’s award-winning romance CAROLINA COWBOY. Escape to the pastures outside of Sunberry, North Carolina and pick up your copy of CAROLINA COWBOY, today.
As with all Clocktower Romances, CAROLINA COWBOY is a complete story with a happily-ever-after.
