Miss Artemis Jones had a teaching position at the exclusive Avon Academy for Young Ladies of Quality in Bath. She was now sitting in the headmistress's office and being scolded for 'subjecting the girls to a frivolous and dangerous novel.' She continues that reading for pleasure was not on the curriculum and that the girls shouldn't be more knowledgeable than the men who would court them.
The headmistress believes that they only have studies in comportment and not the geography, literature and history subjects taught by Artemis. Then she sits in outrage when told that all of her novels have been removed from her private quarters and wouldn't be returned until she leaves their establishment. Her treasured Jane Austen collection. One more issue and she would be dismissed.
As much as she hated her job it was better than being paraded through London ballrooms like a prize cow for sale by her aunt, Lady Wagstaff. Her sister Phoebe was dying to marry but Artemis planned to keep her spinster status. She is just thankful that the headmistress hadn't found her manuscript...because her alter ego is Lydia Lovelace, a gothic romance author.
Before leaving the headmistress's office, she is handed a letter that had been delivered. When she ducks into the room next door she sees its a letter from her best friend, Lucy. She closes her eyes when she reads the letter and Lucy's request for her to be a companion for the upcoming season as her father is forcing her to marry.
This book is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. I loved Artemis and Dominic's story! Artemis is determine to avoid her aunt trying to marry her off and with the help of her friends Lucy and Jane plans her disgrace. Only the Duke of Dartmoor turned the tables on her and her plans.
This book is action-packed from page one and I couldn't put the book down. Artemis is hilarious in the lengths she will go to remain unmarried. Dominic is only accepted in Society due to being a duke as there were questions surrounding the disappearance of his wife years ago.
This book is suspenseful and smoking hot. This is the first time reading anything by Amy Rose Bennett and it definitely won't be the last!
