REVIEW - THE ONES HE LEFT BEHIND by Heather D'Agostino

Hope was eighteen years old and had planned to spend the summer traveling after graduation, but instead Ethan and Cooper had enlisted.  She thought they were playing a joke on her like they've done their whole childhood but here she stood with them waiting for the bus that would take them to boot camp.  She realized this was the first time since they were six that the three of them wouldn't be spending the summer together.

Seven years later she is fighting morning sickness and watching as her husband is lowered into the ground.  His entire platoon was here for Ethan's funeral.  Everyone except for Cooper.  Cooper...who promised he would always be there.

Cooper has been watching Hope and Jake from afar for years, but he can't stay away any longer.  The distance hasn't made the guilt or pain go away.  Jake is the spitting image of his dad and watching him pitch is like turning back the clock.  When he sees Hope and Cooper driving away he grabs a twelve-pack and heads to Ethan's grave...guilt sweeping over him.

What an amazing and emotional read!  This book is very well written and the characters are fully developed and totally relatable.  This is a second-chance slow burn romance.  Hope holds so much anger towards Cooper for staying away for fifteen years when he had always promised to be there for her.  He wasn't only Ethan's best friend, he was also hers.  Cooper is buried in guilt that he survived instead of Ethan.

This book is action-packed from page one and I laughed and boy did I cry.  This may be a slow burn romance but it is full of heat.  I love Jake - this kid is so full of determination.  This is the first time reading Heather D'Agostino and I look forward to reading more!
