INTERVIEW with WILLOW WINTERS

I want to thank Willow Winters for taking the time for this interview!

BIO:

I started writing after having my little girl, Evie, December of 2015. All during my pregnancy with her I read. I only wanted to read romance novels and I read everything I could get my hands on. I would read a book a day — sometimes two. In January I was staying up late with her and just thinking of all these stories. They came to me constantly. I finally sat down and just started writing. I always wanted to do it so I figured, why not?

I never thought I would reach this point of success to be honest. It’s insane to me that I have connected with so many readers. And I love each and every one of them for all of their support. I’ll be honest, some days are HARD. I have my littles during the day and I write at night. Some days are just simply exhausting and then I hear from a reader and it motivates me to push through and keep writing.  I couldn’t be more grateful for this wonderful career.

When I had my baby girl, I needed a piece of me back and a challenge.  I set out for it to be fun and to have some mommy time.  I never anticipated it would turn into this.

Did you have any influencing writers growing up?

I loved RL Stein – with a passion! But I didn’t know him as a writer.  English was my worst subject in school and I’ve always been bad at spelling.  So I tended to shy away from writing and did more reading than anything else.

Are any of your characters based on people in real life?

Yes, but I plead the fifth!

Where do you draw your book inspirations from?

It’s hard to say.  Sometimes I’m just taking a walk around the block or trying to go to sleep when it hits me.  Sometimes a song resonates or a friend says something that sparks an idea.  It just happens.

Do you use have a basic outline when starting a new story or do you let the characters lead the way?

I let the characters lead.  Sometimes I already know a few strong scenes so I make sure to jot them down, but I like to allow the muse full reins and if the idea changes, so be it.

When you are picturing the characters in your book, do you have a cheater photo for inspiration?

Very rarely.  Although most of the time the characters do look like me and hubby in my head.

Many people read as a form of escape and relaxation.  What is your favorite way to sit back and relax?

Manis and pedis.  Hands down.

Who are your favorite current authors to read?

Carly Phillips (I’ve always loved her books before I knew her) and Natasha Madison!

What are your favorite books by others?

Raw by Belle Aurora will always be a favorite of mine and Owned by M Never.

Do the locations in the stories have any meaning to you?

Yes, they’re almost always in the Tri-State area on the East Coast, which is where I grew up when I was younger.

Do you write in single or multiple POV?

Multiple POV

What do you find to be your best research tool?

Google!

Do you write under a pen name?  Also, do you write under more than one name?

Just W Winters and Willow Winters for me!  W Winters is for my darker reads so it acts as a trigger warning for readers.

What genre do you write and why is this your preference?

Romance – any and all romance.  I need that happily ever after.

Tell me something about yourself outside of writing.  Jobs, accomplishments, family, quirky trait...what led to you being you?

I am a social butterfly and I think a lot of people had a hand in making me the way I am (for the good and the bad)

What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

Write for yourself, edit for the masses, market for the money.

How do you deal and process negative book reviews?

I don’t even look at reviews anymore.  I write for myself so as long as I love them, that’s all that matters.

What is the most difficult part of your writing process?

Actually sitting down and focusing to start writing.

Once the doc is opened, it all flows… unless a child storms in.  I can’t wait for school to start again!

What do you need in your writer’s space to keep you focused?

Coffee and my kids to let me be!

What is your naughty indulgence as you are writing?

I’m thinking the book is the naughtiest thing!

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?  And why?

My bestie, Lauren Landish. I miss her and we always have a good time together.

What is your schedule like when you are writing?  Do you have a favorite writing snack or drink?

Coffee and water is all I need.  My schedule is chaotic because of my kids!

Do you listen to music when you write – what kind of music is your favorite?

Nope – ear plugs actually!

Have pets ever gotten in the way of your writing?

Oh yeah.  Jakey (I miss his fluffy butt) used to push my hand away with his head when I was writing darker and sadder moments.  He was a good boy.

What is your kryptonite as a writer?  What totally puts you off your game?

Hubby interrupting me or the kids interrupting.  Especially in the middle of a scene that’s flowing.

Have you ever killed off a character that your readers loved?

Yes.  In Not My Heart to Break but it had to be done!

How do you celebrate after typing THE END?

Wine!

I hope you enjoyed this interview!
