A sensible and plain young woman finds love as she becomes involved in the plots and intrigues surrounding the Earl of Medwell.

Jane Goodwin is the eldest of five sisters. When their father dies, leaving them as orphans, she moves then to London, certain that Cecilia’s beauty will secure her love and a fortune. They are plunged into a world of fashion and society activities and Jane fins herself more and more attracted to Robert Lamercier, Earl of Medwell and their guardian.

The Earl of Medwell’s insouciant charm and rakish facade hide a secret life of intrigue and danger that draws the sisters into a world of spies and treason.

Jane’s intelligence and humor win the earl’s heart but Jane is not sure whether she can trust him, especially when her sister’s love interest raises suspicions about the earl’s activities.

Book One in the Wards of Lamercier series can be read as a standalone but will be enjoyed even more if you read the entire series.

Publisher's Note: This steamy Regency romance contains elements of power exchange.

EXCERPT:

Lord Robert tilted his head and crossed his arms as he watched her, the beginnings of a smile curling his lips. He said nothing. Jane took another two steps closer to him and glanced at the doorway. “My lord, is it not possible to discuss this in the hallway where we are not alone? I am sure the matter cannot be so serious that it needs this kind of privacy.”

“Child, do stop waffling and come closer. It is not possible to hold a conversation across the length of a room.”

“I’m not a child!” Even as she protested, she moved forward responding to the authority in his command.

His eyes raked over her, burning with desire as he lingered on the swell of her breasts, the curve of her hips, the softness of her skin. “You are most definitely not a child,” he agreed. “You are every inch a very desirable woman.” His voice was unusually husky. “But you do need someone to look after you, to share the burden of responsibility that you have shouldered for so long.”

Jane was now so close to the earl that she could smell the woody spiciness of his cologne. “I am quite capable of looking after myself, and my sisters.” She tried to sound as sensible as usual but the proximity of the earl was playing havoc with her senses and her words came out softly, almost hesitantly. In an attempt to rally herself, she straightened her shoulders and cleared her throat. “Which is why I must protest at your bringing me to this very secluded room and endangering my reputation. I am not sure what matter is so important that it could not wait until the light of day.”

Lord Robert placed his finger on Jane’s lips. “Hush, little one. Your reputation is safe with me. There are some things that need a little privacy.” In explanation, he outlined the shape of her lips gently, sending trails of arousal coursing through her body that led straight to her breasts and then continued down to her very core. He leaned down and brushed his mouth where his finger had been.

Author Bio

Kathy Leigh has loved books and writing since she could first follow the stories in her bedtime tales. She began writing stories in old school notebooks when she was eight years old and is now the successful writer of the historical romance series To the Manor Born and The Lords of Voluptas.

A romantic at heart, she is inspired by thunder storms, sunflowers and the belief that every princess deserves to find her prince. She loves curling up on her couch with a good book, a glass of wine and her cats for company. As a young girl she particularly enjoyed novels by Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, and sighed over Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. She now enjoys historical romance with an edge. She also enjoys fantasy, especially if it has a touch of romance.
