Brandon Hulse is scrolling through the tablet that the matchmaker had handed him. His marriage service application had stated clearly that he wanted an African American woman. How hard could it be? But this is the third matchmaker who thought that black Muslim men wanted white women to hang off their arms and not marry within their own race.
Brandon is a successful Boston attorney and he is ready to settle down, but he is beginning to wonder if he should put marriage off for a bit longer. His best friend Adam wants him to talk to the black Muslim matchmaker in his hometown of Philadelphia saying his wife Maryam listens to her podcast.
Hawwah Benoit is continually looking over her shoulder as she fights the crowd leaving the Philadelphia bus terminal. Her cruel ex-husband had tracked her down in Atlanta so she left in the middle of the night to stay with her cousin Maryam in Philadelphia.
I totally enjoyed this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. I had a hard time at the beginning of this book only because I am not familiar with the African Muslim culture and it took me some time to understand their courtship traditions and words of greeting.
Hawwah is a chef who has escaped an abusive husband and a weird marital situation. It didn't help matters that her mother didn't believe the abuse and was siding with her ex-husband and helping him locate her. I found the Muslim courtship traditions to be very interesting. Lyndell Williams did a wonderful job helping a non-Muslim understand these traditions.
This book is action packed from page one. It is full of suspense, danger and intrigue. Brandon and Hawwah have smoking hot chemistry from the second she bumps into him in the coffee shop. This book is smoking hot and has a totally unexpected twist.
This book is definitely for adult readers so beware if you have triggers for abuse or violence. Highly recommend!
